Australian UV is hazing your headlights, and stones are cracking them.
Modern headlights are polycarbonate, not glass. That makes them light and shatter-resistant — and vulnerable to two things Australia has in abundance: ultraviolet light and flying stones.
UV breaks down the factory coating until the lens yellows and clouds. Stones chip and crack it. Both cut your light output, and both are expensive to solve once they've happened.

Our UV index is brutal
Headlights haze faster in Australia than in almost any other market. The factory clear coat on the lens is the sacrificial layer, and it goes first.
They sit right in the debris stream
Low, forward-facing and directly behind the vehicle in front — headlights collect stone strikes at exactly the same rate as your bumper.
Hazing is a safety and rego issue
A clouded lens scatters light instead of projecting it. Less usable light at night, more glare for oncoming traffic, and a potential roadworthy fail.
Modern headlights are not cheap parts
A current LED or matrix headlight assembly is frequently a four-figure part before labour, and on many vehicles the lens isn't separately serviceable — the whole unit gets replaced.
Restoration kits are a temporary fix at best. Sanding and polishing a hazed lens removes what's left of the factory UV coating, which is why restored headlights often haze again within a year.
