How to fit your PPF kit
Your kit is already cut to shape for your exact panel, so there is no measuring, no trimming and no blade near your paint. Five steps, about twenty minutes, and the only real rule is to use plenty of soapy water.
- Time
- 15–30 minutes
- Difficulty
- No experience needed
What you need
- Slip solution — 10ml of slip solution into 1 litre of water — that is the whole recipe. No Install Kit? A few drops of baby soap in the water works as a stand-in
- A soft rubber-edge squeegee — included in the Essentials Bundle; otherwise any soft rubber squeegee, or a card wrapped in microfibre, does the job
- A clean microfibre cloth — for drying the panel and wiping the edges at the end
The install, step by step
-
Clean the panel
Give the area a proper wash and get any grit off it. Run your fingers over the paint — it should feel completely smooth.
Park in the shade, out of the wind. A garage is ideal.
Watch out: Anything left on the paint gets sealed under the film for good, so this is the step worth taking your time over.
-
Dry it off
Dry the panel completely with a clean microfibre. No streaks, no damp patches.
The next step needs a properly dry surface, so do not rush this one.
-
Lay the film on dry and line it up
With the panel still dry, hold the film in place and get it sitting exactly where it needs to go. Check the gaps around every edge.
Doing this dry is the whole trick — you can see precisely where it lands before any water is involved.
Watch out: Left and right pieces are mirror images of each other. Check you have the right one before you peel anything.
-
Now wet it and spray
Holding your position, peel the backing off and spray the sticky side as it comes away. Spray the panel and your fingers too.
Lay it back down on the wet panel — it will now slide, so nudge it back to the position you just worked out.
Watch out: Be generous with the water. Not using enough is the number one reason a first go does not work — the film grabs where it lands instead of sliding.
-
Squeegee, locking the two edges down
Lock one edge down first with a firm pass, then lock the opposite edge. With both edges anchored the film cannot move on you.
Now work the middle, pushing the water out towards the edges you have already set. Finish by wiping the edges dry with the microfibre.
That is it. Any small water pockets left will clear on their own over the next few days.
Where people go wrong
Not enough water
The film has to float to be lined up. If it will not slide, lift it off, spray both sides properly and try again.
Doing it in the sun
Hot paint dries the water before you have positioned the film, and it grabs on contact. Wait for shade.
Chasing every bubble
Small water pockets are normal and disappear on their own. Working them over and over does more harm than leaving them.
Afterwards
- Keep it away from water for 24 hours, and hold off washing the car for a week.
- Any haze or small water pockets clear on their own within a few days.
- Light scratches in the film self-heal in the warmth — a sunny day or some warm water sorts them out.
